Effective scene illumination during high speed imagery was traditionally accomplished with flashbulbs with 20 millisecond adequacy, however, the bulb intensity cannot be increased due to thermal management issues in the short time scale.
Nanohmics designed and fabricated a custom high speed LED replacement for the PF300 flash bulb which is used for scene illumination during high speed capture at a air force munitions proving ground. The Nanohmics’ FlashLED™ uses the highest efficiency LEDs and innovative thermal pathways to efficiently dissipate heat, which allows for the LEDs to be overdriven without damage. The light output from a single flash unit is greater than that of a PF300 bulb. The complete device will be tested under all expected environmental conditions and failures will be analyzed to produce a robust product by the end of the Phase 2 research period.
